This grant has turned into a R370 South African SRD grant which has become a life saver for citizens in need of such help due to prevailing economic conditions. The grant came on board during 2020 since it was introduced as part of the response measures by the government in dealing with the financial hardships induced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although this grant has been very vital in the lives of millions of South Africans, the ongoing payments including the pay-outs regarding November 2024 have significantly delayed, leaving many beneficiaries in a state of uncertainty.
SRD R370 Grant Payments
Also referred to as the COVID-19 social relief grant, the SRD R370 payment is a temporary social assistance that the government offers to unemployed citizens who do not qualify for other types of government assistance. The grant has been extended several times already, and it was expected to extend the support further in November 2024. However, as of mid-December, there was still concern by many applicants about delayed payments for November, some beneficiaries having not received payments.
Reasons for Delay in SRD R370 Grant Payments
There are various causes resulting to the delays in SRD R370 grant payments. The most prevalent cause of the delays is the backlog in application processing. Applications are known to have increased to volumes that overwhelm and are becoming difficult for the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to clear within a specified time. More applications keep flowing in the SASSA offices every month, and as a result, little time has been left for officials to carry on with administrative work involved in reviewing applications, verifying eligibility, and disbursing funds thereby increased wait times for beneficiaries.
In addition, technical meltdowns and system collapses have persistently marred the administration of the SRD grant. At times, SASSA’s payment platform could not handle the high number of applications and was slow in making the payments. In November 2024, reports surfaced that beneficiaries were having problems with non-payments, wrong amounts, or payment being made into the wrong accounts. Such technological glitches cause delays in payment and, sometimes, create confusion and annoyance amongst beneficiaries who rely on these funds for daily living.
Another serious issue contributing to delays in the November SRD payments is that the verification process is still ongoing.
Government has moved to give grants to qualifying applicants
The government has put in place a series of measures to ensure that only deserving applicants benefit from the grant. These include cross-checking the applicants’ particulars with those in other government databases, as well as conducting a variety of checks intended to avoid fraud. While such verification processes are important to retain the credibility of the program, they take time and, therefore, slow down the disbursement of funds for payment.
Thus, continuing problems with the application status affect some beneficiaries. Sometimes, SASSA would tag applicants as ineligible for reimbursements based on reasons such as income thresholds, changes in financial situations, or differences in personal information. If flagged, applicants will have to carry out further documentation or re-verification processes, which usually delays the payment.
The last reason for which the government has been unable to disburse the money is lack of funds as much of the national budget is directed towards some social relief programs like the SRD R370 grant. Sometimes these financial burdens make it difficult for the government to disburse funds on time owing mostly to the juvenile economic statuses currently being faced in the country. These constraints caused significant delays in the realization of the targets set.
What Beneficiaries Can Do
For all those beneficiaries who have not received their SRD R370 payout for November 2024, they should regularly check their application’s status on the SASSA website or call the appropriate customer care helplines to get information on it. Further, SASSA advises applicants to update their personal profile if their banking or employment status changes.
While payment delay has brought much suffering, the government and SASSA are busy working on this to ensure that beneficiaries deserving such payments will receive the aid expected of them. SASSA will be giving rightful updates that all beneficiaries should remain tolerant.
