It was on 19 May 2023 when RBI had an announcement on the ban of 2000 notes, along with stating that everyone should deposit 2000 notes into the bank. To give you an idea, according to the report by RBI, it is being reported that nearly up to date, more than 7000 crore rupees of 2000 notes have been returned into the system after the ban, which accounts for about 94% of the total notes that means still 6% of 2000 notes are lying with people in India.
Under Clean Note Policy, RBI declared the window from 19 September to 30 September 2023 for the collection of 2000 notes, but the fact is that the 2000 denomination notes are still very much a part of the Indian market. Some experts say these notes can be used for many illegal works.
How to deposit 2000 rupee notes
You should deposit your 2000 rupee currency notes if you still have them, because this note has now come to be regarded as an illegal coin. You can still deposit if you hold 2000 rupee notes. There are 19 branches of the Reserve Bank of India across India; you can visit them and deposit the 2000 rupee notes.
